ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS/Gray News) – A university student in South Carolina died over the weekend after officials said he collapsed while playing basketball on campus.

According to Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle, 21-year-old Savion Brown died on Sunday.

Fogle said the 911 caller reported Brown’s collapse while freeplaying basketball in a gym on the Claflin University campus.

Fogle said EMS arrived and rendered aid to Brown before he was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Claflin University confirmed Brown’s death in a statement on Sunday, identifying him as a senior computer science major.

In its statement, Claflin said Brown was a valued member of its community.

“His presence will be greatly missed,” the school said. “Please keep Savion’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Fogle said an autopsy is scheduled for later in the week.
