UPDATE: CCPD headquarters reopens after cannon ball dropped off outside building
CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) [UPDATE 2:20 p.m.] - The Chatham County Police Department headquarters was closed Thursday afternoon after a cannon ball was dropped off outside the building.
The cannon ball was found by a woman who attempted to turn it in.
Per protocol, CCPD called in military officials to scan and clear the cannon ball.
First responders began leaving the scene after the cannon ball was cleared.
The CCPD HQ and nearby tag office have reopened to the public.
[ORIGINAL STORY] The Chatham County Police Department said their headquarters building at 295 Police Memorial Drive is closed to the public while a suspicious package is being investigated and disposed of.
Police said there is no threat to the general public. The Chatham County Tag Office at this location is also closed.
CCPD said they will inform the public once they have re-opened the building.
