UPDATE: Brush fire on Sunny Drive burns more than 16 acres in Chatham County

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - [UPDATE 3/21 11:31 a.m.] A brush fire that started Friday on Sunny Drive has burned more than 16 acres, according to the Chatham County Fire Department.

The fire has topped 16.45 acres of involvement. Chatham County Fire Department staged a 40-acre perimeter for containment.

The scene has been turned over to Georgia Forestry.

Westside residents can expect widespread smoke in the area this evening.

A brush fire that started Friday evening has grown to more than 40 acres and has been turned over to Georgia Forestry.

Chatham County Fire Department crews were dispatched around 7:28 p.m. to the 100 block of Sunny Drive for a large brush fire. Units found visible smoke and flames.

Crews worked to contain the fire, which stretched more than 600 yards. Georgia Forestry was contacted.

The fire has since grown to more than 40 acres. Westside residents can expect widespread smoke.

Drivers should use alternate routes.
