Two dead, two people in custody after pursuit ends in crash at Savannah intersection

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Two people died Thursday after a driver fleeing a traffic stop ran a red light and hit another vehicle at a Savannah intersection.

Chatham County Sheriff’s Office deputies initiated a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Trailblazer at around 9:54 p.m. Georgia State Patrol said the driver refused to stop, accelerated west on Capital Street and initiated a pursuit.

The driver disregarded the red light at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue, according to GSP. Preliminary details of the investigation reveal the front end of the Chevrolet Trailblazer hit the driver side door of a Nissan Juke.

The driver and passenger of the Nissan Juke were ejected from the vehicle after impact, both were pronounced dead on scene.

The driver and two passengers of the Chevrolet Trailblazer were located and placed in handcuffs. GSP said the driver was charged and one of the passengers had felony warrants.

The Department of Public Safety’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team from Troop F arrived on scene to assist.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement Friday:

With regard to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the recent incident, two individuals were arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, active warrants, drugs and weapon offenses. The incident is currently under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol, along with an internal review by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

This matter remains an active and ongoing investigation; therefore, no additional comments can be provided at this time.
