TSA workers continue airport security without pay during government shutdown

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - TSA employees at Savannah Hilton Head International Airport are working their second day without pay as the partial government shutdown continues.

The workers are showing up to screen passengers and luggage as usual, with the only difference being they are not receiving paychecks during the shutdown.

“It’s honestly gross that we expect people the kind of jobs that they do where they are kind of, I feel, in charge of kind of the safety of us getting on these flights,” said Cameron Monckton.

Travelers expressed sympathy for the workers while also showing gratitude for their continued service during the shutdown.

“My wife is flying in and I’m just glad that these TSA folks and others like them are on the job to make her safe,” said John, a traveler at the airport.

During the 43-day shutdown in October, local businesses assisted TSA employees. Bella Napoli prepared hot meals for workers while they went without pay.

The current situation raised questions about government assistance for workers during shutdowns.

“I just wonder what our government is doing to supplement the fact that they are not getting paid, and if there are any benefits that can outweigh that,” Monckton said.

The partial shutdown marks the third time the government has shut down since 2025. Travelers shared concerns about the frequency of these shutdowns and their impact on workers.

“It’s a shame that our government shuts down as frequently as it does. The impact is felt by a lot of people like the TSA workers working without pay, what a shame for them and their families. I just wish our great country could do better,” John said.

After last year’s shutdown, TSA workers received a $10,000 bonus for their work. It remains unclear if something similar will happen once this partial shutdown ends.
