TIFR Rescues Kayaker Stranded in Difficult Conditions
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - Tybee Fire District responded to a rescue call at 12:10 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Jan. 24. Harsh winds and a strong current left a kayaker stranded in the marsh near Lazeretto Creek boat ramp, Fire officials said.
WTOC spoke with Lieutenant Fire Chief Brandon Kuapp on the man’s rescue. Kuapp said the man admitted to not being experienced enough as a kayaker to handle the rough current.
“He didn’t think it would be as bad as it was”, Kuapp said.
Tybee Fire Rescue said they rescued the kayaker and his equipment with a jet ski. No injuries were reported.
Tybee Fire warns patrons to be aware of currents, tides, and incoming storms when headed onto waterways.
