Student shot at Hubert Middle School during basketball practice
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One student was accidentally shot in the locker room at Hubert Middle School during 8th grade basketball practice, according to SCCPSS.
In a media release, the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System said around 2:00 p.m. today, Tuesday, December 30, 2025, coaches in the gym heard what sounded like the discharge of a firearm.
When the coaches rushed to the locker room, one student, a 15-year-old male, was found with an injury to his hand.
SCCPSS says both BOEPD and Savannah Police responded, and the student told investigating officers that a firearm discharged when he picked up his jacket.
Officials say it is believed that another, as yet unidentified student was in the locker room at the time of the incident, and that preliminary information leads investigators to believe that there was no foul play, and there is no danger to anyone in the school or the community.
“This is believed to have been an accidental isolated shooting,” SCCPSS states.
The student was transported to Memorial Children’s Hospital for treatment and the firearm has been recovered outside the school. SCCPSS says the investigation is continuing, and no further information can be released at this time.
The safety of both students and staff is our top priority at Hubert Middle and all SCCPSS schools.
All SCCPSS students are expected to adhere to the Student Code of Conduct, Rule 10 - Weapons.
School is no place for weapons or any item that resembles a weapon.
Anyone who brings a weapon to school will face disciplinary action and the legal consequences associated with the violation of Georgia state law.
