Statesboro community honors 4-year-old Landyn Wilkerson with gun safety vigil
STATESBORO, GA. (WTOC) - The Statesboro community came together Sunday night to honor the life of 4-year-old Landyn Wilkerson and spread awareness about gun safety following the boy’s tragic death last year.
Landyn found a firearm inside a home and accidentally shot himself. Family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember the young boy and use the tragedy to promote safe gun storage.
“It’s just to honor my baby in a meaningful but helpful way as well,” said Travyana Wilkerson, Landyn’s mother.

Community remembers energetic boy
Friends and family described Landyn as a fun and energetic boy who loved life.
“He was a ball of fire. He loved life. He loved Michael Jackson. He’d do the whole like moonwalk and everything in his boots. In his cowboy boots,” said Katie Smith, Landyn’s former teacher.
Jessica Littles, Landyn’s great aunt, said the family hopes to prevent similar tragedies for other families.
“I hope and pray that this doesn’t happen to another mother or another grieving family. Always be prepared for the unexpected because we never in a million years would have ever thought that this would have taken place in our family,” Littles said.

Gun safety demonstrations and resources
Officials and local organizations showed their support with demonstrations and information on gun safety. Attendees received gun locks to promote safe storage practices.
“They gave each member, whoever went to their table, a gun lock. So hopefully they take a moment and think about Landyn and go home and actually use those,” Travyana Wilkerson said.
Smith emphasized the importance of firearm safety in homes.
“Put your firearms up. If you can’t put them up, put a safety on them. And please, don’t have firearms that’s armed,” Smith said. “Lock your firearms up. Practice safety in your home. Let’s just start at home with practicing safety because we’re losing too many little kids.”
Landyn’s family said they will continue to spread awareness and keep his legacy alive through future events.
