The Clinch County Fire has burned more than 16,000 acres and remains only 10% contained. While the fire is several hundred miles south of Atlanta, atmospheric conditions are slowly carrying smoke northward into the metro area through Friday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Why is there smoke in Atlanta

Even though winds are light, they’re enough to transport smoke over long distances. Here’s what’s happening: upper-level winds are pushing air from west to east, but lower-level winds are coming from the southeast because of high pressure sitting over the western Atlantic. That southeast wind, though gentle, is slowly pushing smoke from the Clinch County Fire toward middle and parts of north Georgia.

Think of it like a slow-moving conveyor belt — the smoke doesn’t travel fast, but it travels far.

Air quality in metro Atlanta

Metro Atlanta will experience hazy and smoky conditions through at least Thursday. While everyone will notice the haze, people with respiratory conditions, asthma, or heart disease should be especially cautious. Air quality could worsen for sensitive breathers as smoke continues to drift in. Air quality is even worse toward middle and south Georgia.

What you should do:

  • ✅ Check the air quality index (AQI) before outdoor activities
  • ✅ Consider wearing an N95 mask if you’re exercising outside
  • ✅ Keep windows closed if the haze becomes heavy
  • ✅ Have rescue inhalers on hand if you have asthma
  • ✅ Limit strenuous outdoor activity if you’re sensitive to smoke

When will it rain in Atlanta, north Georgia

The good news: meaningful rain is on the way. Saturday late morning into afternoon, rain will move into metro Atlanta, bringing up to half an inch of moisture. This rain will help suppress smoke and improve air quality — and it’s significant enough that we’re tracking it as a First Alert Weather Day.

The rain will also help with fire danger across southeast Georgia, though the Clinch County Fire will remain a concern until crews can make more progress on containment.
