by Madalyn Bierster

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - According to Tybee Island Police, around 6:30 p.m. Saturday night, Tybee Island began to experience an unpermitted, pop-up event involving hundreds of people around the pier and pavilion.

During the course of that event, officers heard an undeternined amount of shots fired, and the crowd began to scatter.

After being notified of the situation, a number of off-duty Tybee officers immediately responded to the island to assist.

They were joined by officers of the Chatham County Police Department, deputies of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, and members of the Georgia State Patrol.

With the event effectively dispersed, law enforcement began to coordinate efforts to investigate the incident and help ensure public safety.

At this point, police say they have not located a suspect, and no victims have come forward.

This remains an active investigation, and passersby may notice a large police presence in the area.

“We would like to thank all of our partner agencies for their help, and encourage the public to contact the Tybee Island Police Department with any pertinent information surrounding this incident,” per Tybee Island PD.

We’ll provide updates to this story as we can.
