RIDGELAND, S.C. (WTOC) - The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office took control and operational responsibility of the county detention center Monday after officials determined the facility was not meeting required operational standards, according to a press release WTOC just received.

Sheriff Malphrus agreed to bring the facility under his office’s authority to ensure accountability, compliance, and improved conditions. The county made the decision following concerns about the detention center’s operations.

JCSO Assumes Responsibility for Jasper County Detention Center

On Monday morning, Sheriff Malphrus swore in existing detention officers as official Jasper County Sheriff’s Office deputies. The ceremony marked the first step in integrating the detention center into sheriff’s office operations.

The sheriff said his office will focus on improving staffing levels, addressing necessary repairs, and prioritizing safety for both detention officers and inmates.

“The Sheriff’s Office is committed to professionalism, safety, and accountability,” Malphrus said. “Our goal is to ensure the detention center operates at a level that meets required standards while maintaining a safe environment for everyone inside the facility.”

The transition gives the sheriff’s office direct operational responsibility for the detention center moving forward.
