Sheriff’s Office: Arrest made in 2024 Burton double-homicide shooting investigation
BURTON, SC. (WTOC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says it has arrested a St. Helena Island man as part of its ongoing investigation into a deadly shooting in Burton.
According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called shortly before 10:20 p.m. Oct. 23, 2024 to the intersection of County Shed Road and Parris Island Gateway after a report of a shooting.
The sheriff’s office said two 18-year-old males were killed that night.
The sheriff’s office said investigators with the agency’s Northern Investigations section obtained an arrest warrant for 23-year-old Marktazius Jovan Smalls Jr. of St. Helena Island on charges of:
- Arson
- Accessory after the fact
- Possession of a stolen vehicle
Smalls was arrested March 20, 2026, according to the sheriff’s office.

The investigation remains ongoing.
