Sentencing approaches after jury convicts Savannah man in CBD store robbery, Police shooting case

by Madalyn Bierster

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Chatham County jury found a high-profile Savannah robbery and police shooting suspect, guilty on all 13 counts he’s charged with, and his sentencing is approaching soon.

29-year-old Quayshon Whitehurst, whose trial was previously postponed earlier this year, was found guilty on all 13 counts.

WTOC’s earlier reporting shows Whitehurst was accused of robbing a CBD store on Ogeechee Road, hijacking a car, and then shooting at a Savannah Police Officer last June.

Investigators said he took a bookbag from an employee and fled the scene. Police later located him near a Circle K across the street, where authorities say Whitehurst fired at a Savannah Police Department officer.

Savannah Police are investigating a shooting at the Circle K gas station and Chatham Crossing Shopping Center on Ogeechee Road.

Officers returned fire, and Whitehurst was injured, paralyzing him.

WTOC spoke with the store owner and manager following the robbery:

His trial was originally delayed after Whitehurst’s attorney cited a scheduling conflict.

He’s previously argued for a new attorney, and a new judge. You can watch that interaction with Judge Walmsley here.

Following the trial, a jury found Whitehurst guilty of hijacking a motor vehicle, five counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit a felony, robbery by sudden snatching, obstruction of an officer, aggravated assault on a police officer, and theft by taking.

He was also convicted on two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

In Georgia, several of these convictions carry long prison terms. If the judge orders sentences to run consecutively, the total sentence could be decades long.

His sentencing is set for January 28th in front of Judge Walmsley.
