Senators Warnock, Kaine introduce bill to reclaim trade powers

GEORGIA (WALB) - U.S. Senators Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) are pushing a new bill called the Reclaim Trade Powers Act, aimed at ending President Trump’s 10 percent global tariffs on most goods. The legislation reportedly targets an outdated law from 1974 that Trump has used to justify his latest round of tariffs.

Senator Warnock said the tariffs are hurting American families and the economy. He stated in part:

“President Trump’s tariff policies are wrecking our economy and American families are the ones paying the price. This administration promised to protect our workers and bring back manufacturing jobs. Instead, we’re seeing higher costs, job losses, and more uncertainty.”

The legislation follows a recent Supreme Court ruling against the president’s tariff policies. Just hours after that decision, Trump announced the new round of global tariffs.

The Reclaim Trade Powers Act would repeal Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, preventing future presidents from imposing similar tariffs without Congressional approval.
