Scattered trash, abandoned TVs and deserted cars: Neighbors fed up with unkempt properties
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Scattered trash, abandoned TVs and deserted cars— that’s the sight that Tonya, who’s lived in Chatham County for 64 years says her neighborhood has become.
“It’s my neighborhood, along with everybody else’s and we don’t want our property to be devalued and that’s what seems to be happening,” said Tanya.
She took us to several areas off Chevis Road that she says are unkempt and eyesores.
One, on the main road, and another on Walterboro road.
WTOC saw an overloaded trailer, stacks of tires and more than anything, trash.
“There’s trash receptacles there,” said Tanya. “They’re just not placing it in the trash cans.”
While at the Walterboro property WTOC had a conversation with a woman who actually lives there.
She says they allow people to dump metal and it’s their way of helping the community.
She didn’t want to speak on camera but she told me she doesn’t know if the condition of the property is illegal.
Tonya says she’s been complaining to the county’s code enforcement and inspections for about five years.
She hasn’t seen a long-term solution.
“There’s always an excuse as to why they cannot help us,” said Tanya. “But when we look at the ordinances, that’s not true.”
This is an exterior property ordinance put in place by the county.
Several things WTOC saw like abandoned refrigerators, clotheslines, litter and garbage are all noted to be non-compliant.
It’s something Tonya and more of her neighbors would like to see a solution from the county for.
“Can you please just help us,” Tanya asked.
