Savannah to offer shelter ahead of Monday night’s drastically cold temperatures

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah and community partners are joining together to help keep the community safe and warm ahead of the dangerously cold temperatures expected Monday night, Jan. 26, through Tuesday morning, Jan. 27.

The city and partners said they have expanded shelter operation hours, insured warming center space, and transportation assistance is available for citizens experiencing homelessness or without adequate heat.

For warming shelter availability in the Savannah area, see below:

  • The Tompkins Regional Center, 2333 Ogeechee Road, will open Monday at 7 p.m., closing at 7 a.m. the following morning for residents in need of a last resort overnight shelter.
    • 45 beds will be available and up to 10 pets, under the owner’s control, are welcome.
      • Capacity at the warming center will be limited.

  • The Salvation Army at 3100 Montgomery St. stated they will have 5 beds for women and 3 beds for men.

  • The Union Mission at 120 Fahm St. is said to offer 5 beds for women and 15 beds for men.

  • Come As You Are at 1901 Pennsylvania Ave. opened Monday and is said to be open Tuesday with 30 beds available.
    • Shelter availability is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Renegade Paws is said to available for pet assistance.

The city encouraged residents to take precautions during this period of extreme cold by limiting time outdoors, checking on elderly neighbors or those without adequate heat, and bringing pets indoors.

City officials warned the importance of preventing freezing and bursting pipes. They suggested residents should allow both cold and hot water to drip slowly from faucets during overnight hours. Opened cabinets doors under sinks can help warm air circulate around plumbing, and insulating exposed pipes—especially in unheated areas—provides added protection. Homeowners should also ensure they know where their main water shutoff valve is in case of an emergency.
