Savannah murder trial ends in not guilty verdict

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - UPDATE 6:45 p.m. Monday: Mitchell has been found not guilty on all counts by a jury.

Closing arguments are expected Monday in the jury trial of Jaheim Mitchell, the man charged in the 2022 shooting death of Rashard Kinlaw.

Mitchell, now 20, faces multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to the indictment.

The trial began last week in Chatham County Superior Court, with Judge Walmsley presiding. Jury selection started Tuesday morning and continued throughout the week.

Mitchell is accused of fatally shooting 21-year-old Rashard Kinlaw on October 16th, 2022 when he was just 17-years-old.

The shooting happened near the intersection of Mundy Street and Weldon Street, where Savannah Police officers responded to a single-vehicle crash.

Officers discovered Kinlaw inside an overturned sedan suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was transported to Memorial Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Mitchell, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was arrested several weeks later by the U.S. Marshals Service in Martinez, Georgia, about two and a half hours away.
