SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Students from across the country are coming to Savannah State University, and Wednesday was day one for hundreds as they moved into their dorms.

SSU President Jermaine Whirl said they will have around 3,200 students this year, and around 800 of those are the incoming freshmen on campus on Wednesday.

He said it’s important for them to have a welcoming start to their college life.

“They’re coming into a welcoming environment and we’re excited,” he said. “Families are here, they’re going to learn a lot about Savannah State and really become a part of our family here at the institution.”

Miss Savannah State herself, Krystaline Jefferson, was one of many upperclassmen volunteering their time to help pack up and unload.

A graduating senior, she was also able to reflect on her time spent at SSU.

“From my freshman year to now, it has been pivotal,” she said. “I’m very excited to have new students on campus to welcome them here on campus and just give them the experience they deserve as they’ve traveled so far to come here and experience our beloved university.”

Wednesday is just the beginning in many ways. Whirl said they have plenty of activities to welcome them more starting Wednesday through the rest of the week.
