Savannah State University student recognized among nation’s best Army cadets
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Savannah State University Army ROTC cadet has been recognized as one of the top 4 percent of cadets in the nation, the university announced today in a press release.
Mya Lomax, a senior business marketing major with a military science minor, earned the ranking from a pool of more than 5,580 cadets across the country. She maintains a 4.0 GPA and is set to graduate and commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in May 2026.
Lomax grew up in a military family in Kissimmee, Florida. Her father served 20 years in the Navy, and her older sister currently serves in the Army reserves.
“My dad is retired from the Navy, he did 20 years. My older sister is currently in the reserves in the Army, and I’m following in their footsteps,” Lomax said.
Lomax started at Savannah State in fall 2022, drawn to both the business marketing program and Army ROTC opportunities.
“What attracted me to SSU was the atmosphere and the opportunities the university could offer me,” she said. “From the moment I toured the school, I felt the warm welcome of a home away from home.”
During her time at the university, Lomax has joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity. She has received multiple scholarships that will allow her to graduate debt-free next semester.
She credits faculty and staff mentors for helping guide her success, particularly U.S. Army Capt. Jon Day, assistant professor of military science, and Christopher McCall, director of Human Resources for Army ROTC.
The national ranking serves as validation for Lomax’s dedication to her studies and military preparation.
“I am super grateful to be recognized as one of the top 4% of Army Cadets in the nation,” she said. “It means so much to know that my hard work never went unnoticed.”
McCall praised Lomax’s leadership and impact on the program.
“From the day Cadet Mia Lomax set foot on the SSU Campus, she has led from the front,” McCall said. “Her selection as a top 4% Cadet in the nation has boosted the credibility of the SSU Army ROTC program. I am extremely proud to have her as a student and a Cadet.”
