Savannah Police urge vigilance as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continue into the night
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah Police were posted at City Market Tuesday night as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations continued downtown, with officers planning to remain in the area for the rest of the evening.
Police said they were prepared for large crowds as parade-goers and visitors carried festivities into the night. As of early Tuesday evening, Savannah Police confirmed several arrests, noting they were related to minor situations.
Officials also said added sanitation measures including more portable bathrooms and trash stations have helped manage the crowds this year.
Still, police emphasized that with the size of St. Patrick’s Day crowds in Savannah, the night is never routine.
“The crowd we know is probably going to grow a little bit so we’re going to have our officers out and making sure that everybody stays safe, and that if any concerns come about that we deal with it accordingly,” said Sgt. Joshua Flynn with Savannah Police. “But we know after the parade everybody’s excited and they’re going to want to party as long as they can. And it’s the middle of the week so it’s going to bring about a different change for us but we’re ready for it.”
Savannah Police encouraged everyone to enjoy the night responsibly, stay vigilant, and report suspicious activity.
