Savannah PD makes contact with man in picture shared in connection to Forsyth Park acid attack

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Savannah Police Department said they made contact with the man who’s picture they shared on social media last week.

Savannah Police give Sunday update on acid attack investigation at Forsyth Park

Last week, police said they were looking to identify the man in the picture above. On Dec. 14, they clarified that he was not a suspect, but said they wanted to, “identify this man in connection with a Dec. 10th aggravated assault near W. Walburg St. and Whitaker St. He is NOT a suspect in the case.”

Police said they have made contact with the man, nearly a week after a woman was attacked in Forsyth Park and left with second and third degree chemical burns.

Savannah’s mayor addresses safety concerns after acid attack in Forsyth Park

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson says they are using all technology available to help find the person behind the acid attack at Forsyth Park.

It’s been six days since the attack that left Ashley Wasielewski with second and third degree chemical burns, and now Savannah police are speaking with their biggest person of interest.

That person’s relation to the attack is currently unknow. This person did come to SPD voluntarily and has not been detained or given any criminal charges. We asked Mayor Van Johnson about the investigation, and he addressed safety concerns from the public which have kept some residents from going on walks at night.

“How do you prepare for something like this? So I repeat my assertion ‘Oh Savannah’s not safe’ I mean no, this was off the norm. And we are going to find the individual, we are going to find the facts,” said Mayor Johnson.

The mayor also discussed technology being used to reveal who was near the area at Forsyth when the attack happened by working with the FBI to ping phones.
