Savannah Feed the Hungry serves thousands at annual Christmas dinner
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Enmarket Arena was filled with families Monday night as Savannah Feed the Hungry hosted its annual Christmas dinner.
Now in its seventeenth year, the event brought volunteers and neighbors together to serve thousands of meals, using more than two thousand pounds of turkey. Along with food, families also received groceries, clothing, and even haircuts.
Organizers say the night carried special meaning, marking a milestone of more than two million meals served to the community.
“Feed the Hungry is a rainbow of fraternities, sororities, churches, organizations that we can come together for the greater good of feeding the working poor,” said State Rep. Carl Gilliard, who represents Georgia District 162. “We started with two pieces of bread and one piece of bologna. To be here and to be successful in one thing, bringing people together and serving hope on the plate.”
Gilliard says the event represents a blessing for the community and a way to give back, sharing the same hope and support that once helped guide him.
