by Christopher Teuton

ALMA, Ga. (WTOC) - The Bacon County Sheriff’s Office is warning locals about a new type of scam in the area.

According to a social media post made by the department, multiple individuals have received phone calls from scammers claiming that an inmate in the Bacon County Jail needs money for a watch or ankle monitor to be released.

The sheriff’s office says then the scammers request payment to complete the process.

“THIS IS A SCAM,” the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office says. “DO NOT provide any financial information, credit card numbers, or payments of any kind. The Sheriff’s Office and the Jail will NEVER contact anyone by phone to request payment for an inmate’s release or monitoring equipment.”

If you receive such a call, the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office advises you to hang up immediately.
