SCAD Film Festival brings Spike Lee, Will Arnett, and more on day 4

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The SCAD Film Festival continues to roll on with guests like Spike Lee and Will Arnett coming to the Hostess City.

WTOC caught up with a couple of the festival’s award recipients

“Is this going to make the news? You guys are the southeast leader of news right,” said Will Arnett.

“It’s my second time here, I came here years ago I love this city, it’s beautiful,” said Arnett.

“There’s something about the confluences of where we’re at with the ocean but also we’re in the Deep South that kind of all hits,” said Clint Bentley, Director of Train Dreams. “It’s a really special place.”

Will Arnett has played many roles, from in front of a camera in Arrested Development to voice acting as Lego Batman and BoJack Horseman, and he told me about when he first went all-in on his career.

“I think the moment that you decide there’s nothing else that I want to, that was the moment, moving to New York when I was 20,” said Arnett. “That was the moment where I was like ‘I’m doing this’ and I was all in.”

Arnett was awarded the Luminary Award Tuesday night, and his new film “Is This Thing On?” was the final screening of the night.

We also spoke with the Clint Bentley, the director of Train Dreams -- played earlier in the day. He told me about growing up hours away in north Florida, and his experience with SCAD.

“I’ve been to Savannah many times but never to the festival and I think that just like seeing the SCAD students, I went to college south of here and we would party with the SCAD students sometimes and they were always the cooler kids, and now I see why,” said Bentley.

Train Dreams was set in the Pacific Northwest, and he spoke about filming in different climates, mentioning a land’s character.

“In every region where you go to whether it’s here in Savannah or in Florida where I was raised, or the Pacific Northwest or Vietnam,” said Bentley. “Nature there takes its own personality and has its own characteristics, and when you’re making a film it’s just about trying to bring that out.”

Both men gave advice as well, saying sticking together and enjoying the little victories of life are key to success.
