Richmond Hill family raises money for daughter’s brain treatment at Duke University

RICHMOND HILL, Ga. (WTOC) — A Richmond Hill family is asking for community support to fund a medical treatment at Duke University for their daughter, who suffered brain damage at birth.

Jazmynn Allen began having multiple seizures at 10 months old. Doctors say she suffered brain damage at birth and told her mother, Cody Allen, that Jazmynn would likely never walk, talk, or have a chance at a normal life.

The family has continued to look for ways to better Jazmyn’s life by participating in clinical trials and pursued multiple surgeries for Jazmynn over the years.

Treatment at Duke University

Cody Allen found a cellular therapy program at Duke University that could help strengthen the damaged parts of Jazmynn’s brain and improve her mobility. The treatment involves a donor cord blood stem cell infusion.

Duke initially declined Jazmynn for the program due to low brain activity shown on an MRI. Cody Allen said she submitted videos of her daughter to the Duke team, which led them to reconsider.

“You have done an amazing job advocating for her,” Cody Allen said, recounting what a Duke representative told her. “Because some people give up after that.”

Now, the Allen family faces another big issue, the treatment costs $15,000 and must be paid upfront.

“It’s not like I’m just asking for money for just something random,” Cody Allen said. “I’m trying to give my daughter the best life possible.”

How to help

The Allen family is hosting a fundraiser on March 22 from 3–5 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Historical Society Museum. Local businesses are chipping in to help with gift cards, bounce houses, baskets to be auctioned off, food truck, and photoshoots for families.
