REAL ID requirement begins for domestic flights

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -Anyone flying in the U.S. must now have a REAL ID to board domestic flights or pay a $45 fee from the Transportation Security Administration, beginning today.

A REAL ID is one that has been specifically vetted by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Other forms of identification include a passport or Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler card.

Travelers at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport said they had no idea about the policy starting today but were relieved to have already gotten their REAL IDs.

“We had no idea. I just looked at my ID, which luckily, I do have the star on it. So I guess I make the cut and I don’t have to pay the extra fee, but like had no idea that that was starting today,” said Kathleen King, who is visiting from Boston.

TSA ConfirmID will be an option for those without a REAL ID.
