Patriotism on display as wreaths honor veterans at Bonaventure Cemetery
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Burial sites and memorials across the country honored fallen service members Saturday by placing wreaths on veterans’ graves, a tradition held each year during the holiday season to remember their sacrifice.
One of those ceremonies took place at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah.
The historic cemetery, known for its centuries-old oak trees and views, is the final resting place of thousands of Savannah residents, including generations of military service members from multiple wars.
Volunteers, veterans’ groups, and community organizations gathered throughout the grounds to lay wreaths at veterans’ gravesites.

“This is where the American Legion section is, this is Section O, but there are thousands dispersed all over the cemetery,” said Cheryl Odell, the location coordinator for Bonaventure Cemetery.
The ceremony included music from Savannah Pipes and Drums, adding a solemn tone to the event.

“I feel very honored to be a part of remembering those who are serving and those who have fallen,” said bagpiper, Shawn McConnell.
Organizers say this year marked the event’s third year at Bonaventure, and participation continues to grow.

“Being our third year, we never know what to expect given the weather or people’s plans, but this year we doubled our size,” Odell said. “With the country approaching its 250th anniversary and Savannah being such a military town, people seem more patriotic and eager to give back.”
Community involvement ranged from active-duty military members to high school military academies, Boy Scouts, and local veteran-focused organizations.
“It’s great to see the participation of everyone,” McConnell said. “So many groups that are active with our veterans here in Savannah came out.”

Even visitors touring the cemetery stopped to take part.
“Some people are just on tour and happen to stop, but they want to help,” Odell said. “In total, 888 wreaths were placed to honor our veterans.”
Organizers say the annual ceremony serves as both a tribute to those who served and a reminder of the community’s continued gratitude for their sacrifice.
