Over 100 athletes to gather for 2025 Youth Goalball Invitational

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Almost 100 athletes from around the country will gather in Savannah this weekend for a sports invitational, but it’s for a sport you might not be too familiar with.

The Georgia Blind Sports Association is hosting their Youth Goalball Invitational with 16 teams throughout the weekend.

“Goalball is the best sport you’ve never heard of.”

Goalball is a fast paced Paralympic sport, designed for athletes who are blind or visually impaired.

Played indoors with three players per side- all athletes wear eye shades for fairness and track the ball by listening to the bells inside it.

Teams score by throwing the ball into their opponent’s net while defenders dive to block shots with their bodies.

Two of the athletes competing are from right here in the Savannah area. The team’s coach says having a sport designed for them helps the kids experience a sense of normalcy.
