Oscar Mayer Wienermobile rolls into Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile made a stop in Savannah, drawing in local families eager to see the vehicle in person.
Standing 24 hot dogs high and 18 hot dogs wide, the Wienermobile weighs just over 140,500 hot dogs. The vehicle has been traveling across the country and made its stop in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry.
First conceived by Carl Mayer, the nephew of Oscar Mayer, the Wienermobile has been on the road for nearly 90 years.
The hot dog theme extends to the interior, which features a hot-dog-shaped dashboard, a removable “bun” roof, and a spilled-ketchup walkway.
The drivers, known as “Hotdoggers,” travel cross-country with the vehicle. One driver, Zoe Smith, whose Wienermobile name is “Zoweenie” said the experience spans generations.
“It’s the best part when people come up to us and they’ve seen the Wienermobile when they were a kid with their grandfather,” Smith said. “And getting to have that experience for new families is amazing.”
Another Hotdogger, Hunter Gonzales, known as “Hot Diggity Hunter” described the reaction the vehicle gets on the road.
“People are always waving at us, especially if we’re driving, they’re honking, they’re taking videos and such,” Gonzales said.
The Savannah stop was the last scheduled appearance for the vehicle in the area, as the crew moves on to the next stop on their cross-country tour.
