One woman dead after shooting off Middleground Rd., suspect in custody

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - [UPDATE as of 1:23 p.m.] The woman who was shot at the Marathon gas station connected to Chu’s Convenience Mart off Middleground Road has died, Savannah Police has told WTOC.

The case is now being investigated as a homicide.

[UPDATE as of 12:45 p.m.] One woman is in the hospital, and a suspect is in custody after a shooting on the south side of Savannah.

The shooting happened at around 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Marathon gas station, which is connected to Chu’s Convenience Mart.

Savannah Police Department officials at the gas station at Middleground Road and Mohawk Street told WTOC that a woman was taken to the hospital, but they do not know the severity of her injuries as of 12:45 p.m.

They said the male suspect shot her, then took off on Mohawk St. in their car. After getting about half a mile away, the person then jumped out of the vehicle. The car then ended up in Mohawk Lake.

The suspect was taken into custody, and the weapon was recovered.

SPD said they do not know if the people were connected or if this was a random act.

There is no threat to the public.

[ORIGINAL STORY] Police are currently blocking the road at Heroes Way and Shawnee Street near the VA.

WTOC is on the scene working to learn more information.

Our crews have confirmed the road is blocked at Apache Avenue and Mohawk Street as well.

Middleground Road and Mohawk St. are also completely shutdown. Caution tape has been raised and multiple police officers are on the scene.

Locals and travelers are advised to avoid the area at this time.
