One injured, three displaced in Burton house fire
BURTON, S.C. (WTOC) - A house fire in the Grays Hill community early this afternoon sent one person to the hospital and forced a family from their home.
Just before 1 p.m., crews with the Burton Fire District, MCAS Fire and Emergency Services, Beaufort County EMS, and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a fire after a caller said flames were coming from the side of a house and everyone inside was getting out.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire burning along the side of the home.
Crews were able to get the fire under control fairly quickly, but cold temperatures and falling snow made the cleanup more difficult, stretching the response to more than two hours.
An adult man suffered non-life-threatening injuries while trying to put out the fire before firefighters arrived. He was treated by emergency crews.
Two adults and one child were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross is now helping the family with temporary assistance.
Investigators believe the fire may have started because of an electrical issue involving a golf cart, though the cause is still under investigation.
Fire officials say this is the second fire this month in the Burton Fire District that has resulted in injuries and families being displaced.
