Old Savannah City Mission in need of food donations ahead of Thanksgiving
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Those experiencing homelessness and financial disparities often face the heartbreaking choice between paying rent and utilities or buying food.
The Old Savannah City Mission is doing their part to help those in need in the Savannah community especially as the holidays near.
With Thanksgiving approaching, the mission is inviting the community to participate in providing food items for its annual Great Day of Thanksgiving Dinner.
The organization is also seeking donations to be able to give away bicycles and other needed items to those who could use the help.
“As we approach the holiday season, we’re asking Savannah to grocery shop for those who can’t afford to shop,” said Keith Picklesimer, Development Director of Old Savannah City Mission.
According to Picklesimer, “If you can just add some extra food to your grocery cart, that food you buy can become the food we need to provide the kindness of a traditional Thanksgiving meal to those who can’t afford to eat.”
Right now, the organization needs at least 50 turkeys. In addition, they’re looking for nearly 1,200 pounds of canned vegetables, potatoes, cranberry sauce and dessert items. They expect to serve up to 600 meals on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
“We also are looking for gift cards, bicycles, tents and sleeping bags,” says Picklesimer. “With colder weather coming it is a good time to donate your extra blankets, gently worn jackets, gloves, and scarves to those who have nothing. Whatever money you can give goes directly to pay for the help people need.”
Financial donations can be made here.
Items can be dropped off at: Old Savannah City Mission warehouse (behind the Mission) 2414 Bull Street.
