New video shows the seconds before shooting between Savannah Police and Mark Whibbey Jr.
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A new video obtained by WTOC shows the seconds before Savannah Police shot and killed Mark Dennis Whibbey, Jr., age 27, of Seabrook, South Carolina.
Savannah Police say officers received multiple 911 calls of an individual, later identified as Whibbey, carrying a gun downtown on Thursday, Jan. 22 at about 1:30 p.m.

According to the GBI, officers made contact with Whibbey and issued verbal commands for him to drop the firearm. Whibbey did not comply, according to the GBI and continued walking north on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive toward the Riverwalk area.
Video surveillance footage shows that officers were able to isolate Whibbey in one of the expanded Riverwalk sections. Investigators say Whibbey began pacing and holding a firearm at his side.
According to Jeni Davault, general manager of Poe’s Tavern, the suspect raised his weapon during the encounter.
New video footage obtained by WTOC shows the seconds that led up to that shooting between Savannah Police officers and Whibbey. The content of the video is graphic and viewer discretion is advised.
As per Savannah Police Department policy, all five of the officers who shot Whibbey are on administrative leave while the GBI investigation into the event continues.
