Neighborhood Improvement Association Offer Free Tax Preparation through VITA Program

by Shakuria Smith

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -With the 2026 tax season underway, the Neighborhood Improvement Association (NIA) is offering free tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Tax preparation services will begin January 20.

Debra Simmons, director of NIA, says VITA is a federally sponsored, community-based program that provides free, high-quality federal and state tax return preparation for eligible residents. The service supports low- to moderate-income taxpayers, seniors, people with disabilities, individuals with limited English proficiency, and residents in rural communities. The program also helps taxpayers claim credits that may increase refunds while avoiding costly tax preparation fees.

NIA has also moved to a new location. The organization’s office is now located at 7010 Skidaway Road, Unit 9, at the Skidaway and Eisenhower intersection. In addition to its main office, NIA operates VITA sites in Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty counties.

NIA is also seeking volunteers. Training sessions are scheduled for January 10 and January 17, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at South University, located at 709 Mall Boulevard.

For more information about services, locations, or volunteer opportunities NIA encourages residents to contact the organization directly at 912-447-5577.
