NEW DETAILS: Person shot, killed by Hardeeville Police identified as 19-year-old from Pawley’s Island

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (WTOC) - [UPDATE 4:32 p.m.] The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division announced it was investigating this shooting in a press release WTOC just received.

In the release, SLED says Hardeeville Police Department officers responded to the Super 8 Motel on Whyte Hardee Boulevard regarding a call for service involving a person trying to enter parked vehicles.

Officials say officers then encountered an armed man matching the description of the subject in the parking lot of the Shell gas station next door. SLED says officers identified the man in the gas station parking lot as the same person trying to enter parked cars.

“During the encounter, there was an altercation and an exchange of gunfire,” SLED says. “Both the man and a Hardeeville Police officer were shot and transported to the hospital.”

The man, Jayden Jerome Holloway-Caldwell (19), died of his injuries.

SLED says this is an ongoing investigation and no other information about the case will be disclosed at this time.

[ORIGINAL STORY] The Jasper County Coroner’s Office has identified the suspect who was killed by Hardeeville Police on Friday, January 23, 2026, as 19-year-old Jayden Holloway-Caldwell.

Holloway-Caldwell was from Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. Police said the shooting happened at around 4:30 a.m. Friday morning near Exit 5 by the Shell gas station. The incident happened during an active law enforcement response.
