Mobile barber shop offers free haircuts to golfers, caddies at Heritage tournament
HILTON HEAD, S.C. (WTOC) - Life on the PGA Tour for a professional golfer or caddie can be a busy one.
They are constantly traveling around the world to play in tournaments and sometimes they don’t have time to knock out the essentials.
Barbers of the Lowcountry has loaded up a mobile unit and parked in right next to the course for the last four years. A place where golfers, caddies, and support staff can go to get a free haircut from one of several trained barbers.
Whether it be a touch-up, a beard trim, shave, or a haircut that has needed to happen for a couple of weeks.
Barbers get to spend 15-20 minutes cleaning up some of the world’s best, while also talking with them like they have known each other for years.
The idea was sparked back in 2018, when the shop was working an amateur golf event and a golfer suggested that they set up shop at the Heritage.
Eight years later, thanks to some funding from the Heritage Foundation, golfers and caddies are making sure to fit a return trip to the barber shop into their busy schedule or going for the first time.
So far, this week they say business has been busy.
Two barbers were working the past two days, and one will be ready to go on Thursday and Friday.
One of the owners told WTOC that the coolest part about providing this service is the memorable moments it creates for his employees.
“Special for my barbers because I give different barbers an opportunity to come out, get out of the shop, the routine of the shop, and experience the beautiful weather which we always seem to have here. They get to cut some interesting people. The golfers, the players, the caddies, they are all very friendly and treat us like they have known us forever,” said Brent Nelsen, Co-owner of Barbers of the Lowcountry.
The mobile unit has a Heritage-themed canvas that gets signed by every player. That is later auctioned during a charity golf tournament in November, where the funds support childhood cancer survivors.
