Marshpoint Elementary celebrates early literacy with pizza party

by WTOC Staff

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - United Way of the Coastal Empire celebrated early literacy with a pizza party at Marshpoint Elementary. It was part of the Read United Day Shared Reading Challenge.

WTOC’s Dawn Baker, Camile Syed and Elizabeth Rawlins read to the pre-K students.

The celebration recognized families and students who committed to reading together every day in February.

One Pre-K student, Justice Lankford, was randomly selected as the school’s STAR Reader, earning the party for the entire grade level.

United Way says daily shared reading helps build confidence and stronger skills early.

“Reading on grade level and beyond is essential to being able to accomplish your dreams. And so this is just one small part of United Way and our community coming together to support our students and our children, but it’s a pretty impactful way to do it,” said President and CEO of The United Way of The Coastal Empire, Kimberly Waller.

Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts said the community support is keeping early literacy a shared priority.
