Man arrested in hit-and-run death of Larry Haywood, beloved ‘Flag Man’
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Police have arrested a man in connection with the hit-and-run death of a beloved local figure known as “The Flag Man.”
Byron Reedy, 38, was taken into custody Wednesday, January 21, 2026, by Savannah Police Department traffic investigators. He faces multiple charges in the April 9, 2025, crash that killed Larry Haywood, who was widely known by locals as “The Flag Man.”
The crash happened around 8:55 p.m. at Skidaway Road and East 49th Street. Haywood was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a motor vehicle that left the scene.
Police found Haywood injured at the crash site. He was treated and taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Reedy has been charged with homicide by vehicle, hit-and-run resulting in death, serious injury by motor vehicle, and tampering with evidence. He also faces charges of operating a vehicle without a tag, no proof of insurance, driving with a suspended license, and failure to yield right of way to a bicyclist.

The arrest comes more than nine months after the fatal crash. Police have not released details about what led investigators to Reedy.
