Longshoremen’s union hosts annual Christmas toy giveaway
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -The International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1414 held its annual Christmas giveaway Saturday, distributing toys and gift cards to thousands of children and families.
The ILA partnered with Gateway Terminals, Tyco Trucking Company, its international and district office, and other partners to compile money for the event.
The union distributed bikes, scooters, gift cards, and more during the giveaway, which featured items for children of all ages.
Lines for the giveaway stretched throughout the ILA’s parking lot. Union President Paul Mosley Sr. said in the 20 years he has organized the event, this year drew the longest line ever.
Mosley credited the increased turnout to tariffs and the overall state of the economy.
“Being in the shipping industry, we understand what has happened with the economy,” Mosley said. “What you’re talking about, the government shutdown, you’re talking about the tariff taxes. These type of things tend to impact the community as a whole.”
Mosley said economic decisions have significant impacts on people’s lives and their financial situations.
“When you’re looking at decisions that are made, these decisions that are made are very impactful on people’s lives and their economy,” he said. “So when you see that there’s a need for help for the economy and God has blessed you, you tend to bless those who are less fortunate.”
Mosley said his biggest hope from the giveaway is for every child to walk away with a smile.
