Local fire departments providing aid in Brantley County wildfire
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Several fire departments from the Coastal Empire are dispatching aid to help with the Brantley County wildfire.
WTOC learned late Wednesday afternoon the Pooler Fire Department will be deploying two firefighters and a brush fire truck to the fire. The team will depart at 6 a.m. on Thursday.
Effingham County Fire Rescue will be deploying an Engine Company and a Command Unit to Brantley County to assist in fighting the fire. Officials with the department say if conditions worsen, the department may send additional units later in the week.
A team from the McIntosh County Volunteer Fire Department is already on the ground assisting.
Brantley County has requested mutual aid to battle the growing flames. Government officials have issued mandatory evacuations, closed roads, and opened shelters for people who have been displaced.
The Brantley County School System announced classes have been cancelled for Wednesday.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a state of state of emergency for 91 counties in response to ongoing wildfires in south Georgia on Wednesday. The Georgia Forestry Commission also issued a burn ban in those same 91 counties on Wednesday, marking the first ban of its kind in the state’s history.
