LIST: Local schools monitor possibility of snow this weekend
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The chance of snow is becoming more of a possibility this weekend. We are watching the development of a low-pressure system with an increasing chance of accumulating snowfall Saturday afternoon and evening. Our forecast shows best chance for snow will be north of I-16, where over an inch of snowfall remains possible.
A Winter Storm Watch will be in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon for our counties north of I-16.
As we continue to track the possible snow event, many schools in our area are also monitoring the conditions to ensure student and staff safety.
Savannah State University
- All campus events and non-essential operations have been canceled through the weekend.
- As the campus cafeteria will not be open through the weekend, SSU is coordinating with its campus food service partner, Elior, to provide to-go meals Friday and Saturday. Pickups will be available during the following times:
- January 30, 2026: 7:00–9:00 p.m.
- January 31, 2026: 7:00–9:00 a.m.
- Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to plan accordingly, limit travel when possible, and prioritize personal safety during these adverse weather conditions.
- Information regarding Monday’s classes and campus operations will be shared on Sunday afternoon. The university will continue to monitor weather developments and provide updates as needed.
Georgia Southern University
- Georgia Southern University announced they will operate under reduced operations on Saturday and Sunday. The university said only essential personnel should be on campus during the two-day period.
- All university-sponsored events are cancelled, all dining locations and libraries will be closed this weekend. The university says housing on campus will remain open.

Beaufort County School District
- Extracurricular activities taking place on Saturday and Sunday are cancelled. The school district said an update will be provided by Sunday at 2 p.m. if there are any anticipated changes for school and district operations on Monday.
- The Beaufort County School District said they continue to be in consultation with Emergency Management regarding cold weather impacts for the next few days.
Bulloch County School District
- Bulloch County Schools has cancelled all school-related events and trips that were scheduled for this weekend (Jan. 31-Feb. 1).
- Schools will communicate specific details about any affected events with their students and families.
- The school district will alert families on Sunday if there are any changes to school operations for Monday and the coming school week.
Effingham County School District
- The Effingham County School District said they are monitoring weather conditions after receiving an update from Effingham Emergency Management about weekend winter weather.
- Schools expect to continue normal operations on Friday, Jan. 30.
- ECSD said it will continue monitoring weather throughout Friday and the weekend and will share regular updates as new information becomes available.
Savannah-Chatham County School District
- At this time the district plans to operate on its regular schedules Monday.
- On Saturday, any SCCPSS sponsored event being held at a district facility or requiring district transportation will either be canceled or postponed based on the forecast for snow Saturday afternoon.
- SCCPSS will continue to monitor the weather throughout the weekend.
- If there is a need to make any operational changes for Monday due to a change in the expected forecast, SCCPSS will communicate that no later than 2:30pm on Sunday.
Bryan County School District
- Bryan County Schools is closely monitoring the anticipated weather expected to impact our area over the weekend. At this time, it fully anticipates being in school Monday.
- Bryan County Schools will remain in close contact with the National Weather Service and Bryan County Emergency Management, and will send additional communication if there are significant changes.
