JESUP, Ga. (WTOC) - The Jesup Mayor and City Commission have authorized a comprehensive review of public safety issues, building code compliance, and nuisance conditions at Briarwood Apartments following reports of criminal activity and unsafe housing conditions, according to a social media post made by the City of Jesup.

The resolution directs city officials to investigate the apartment complex at 1201 South First Street after numerous reports of disturbance calls, fights, drug activity, robbery, and a recent shooting, according to the city.

City officials also cited unsafe or unlivable housing conditions as part of the review.

Investigation underway

The City Marshal, Police Chief, Fire Chief, Building Inspector, City Manager, and City Attorney have been directed to investigate and compile information to ensure residents have a safe, livable environment.

The city said residents will not be penalized for reporting unsafe conditions and encouraged tenants to report issues involving unsafe or uninhabitable units, fire hazards, criminal activity, and violations of building or housing codes.

City officials said they intend to hold the owners and managers of Briarwood Apartments accountable for correcting all violations and improving overall safety.

Residents can contact the City Marshal’s Office or Building Inspector at 912-427-1300 to report concerns or ask questions.
