Jeff Davis County wildfire grows to 200 acres; Multiple agencies respond to protect homes

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Fire crews are responding to multiple wildfires in Jeff Davis County today, including a brush fire reported around 2:00 p.m. in the Dan Thigpen, Burketts Ferry, and Claxton Road area.

Officials say the fire activity has grown significantly, with estimates reaching between 150 and 200 acres. Homes were threatened, and firefighters also faced dangerous conditions while working to contain the blaze.

Crews are battling severe drought conditions, along with downed timber left behind by Hurricane Helene, which is making containment more difficult.

Multiple agencies are assisting in the response, including Georgia Forestry Commission Rangers and Air Operations, along with firefighters from Jeff Davis, Graham, and Telfair counties.

The Hazlehurst-Jeff Davis County Fire Department says crews are actively working in the area to protect nearby residents and property, and is asking the public to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel and equipment to operate safely and efficiently.

Officials thanked Georgia Forestry and neighboring departments for their efforts, and say additional updates will be provided as they become available.
