Jasper Co. mother pleads for answers after son killed in hit-and-run near Broad River Bridge

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WTOC) - Nearly eight months after a deadly hit-and-run near the Broad River Bridge, a mother is pleading for anyone with information to come forward.

Dontay Frost, a beloved dump truck driver and son, was killed in April while on his way to work, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Investigators say two vehicles struck Frost while he was lying in the road. Both vehicles then left the scene headed toward Bluffton.

His mother, Sharon Frost, described Dontay as outgoing and helpful, a man who took joy in his family, especially his niece, India.

“He was just an outgoing person. Anything that you asked him to do he would do it for you,” Sharon Frost said. “He would light up, and she loved her uncle so much.”

According to Sharon Frost, Dontay was riding with his girlfriend when they stopped just past the Broad River Bridge. Frost got out of the vehicle, and the girlfriend later called Sharon, screaming that she thought Dontay had been hit by a car.

South Carolina Highway Patrol investigators say one of the vehicles involved was a Honda Civic and the other was an SUV. Troopers believe both left the scene heading toward Bluffton.

At the scene where Dontay died, a cross bearing his name now sits surrounded by flowers. His mother says the hardest part has been not having a chance to say goodbye.

“The only thing that hurts me the worst is that I couldn’t get to touch him or kiss him goodbye. I couldn’t get to see him,” she said.

Sharon Frost says she has forgiven the people involved but wants someone to take responsibility so the family can have closure.

“I want whoever did it to turn themselves in, so that the case can be closed and I can get closure,” she said.

She says she has been able to make it through the past months with the support of her family and was given peace when she saw Dontay in a dream.

“God showed me my child in a dream,” she said. “He was lying straight on white fluffy clouds, and he was handsome with no scars, no bruises, no nothing.”

Authorities have not announced any arrests. We have reached out to law enforcement for any updates and are waiting to hear back.

If you have information that could help investigators, you are asked to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
