I-16 westbound lanes reopen after major crash in Effingham County

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) [UPDATE 2:50 p.m.] According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened around 10:30 a.m.

A vehicle rear-ended a semi-truck, leading to a chain reaction involving one other vehicle and another semi-truck. One person was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The interstate reopened around noon.

[UPDATE 1:20 p.m.] - Thursday around 10:30 a.m. the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol responded to a major crash on I-16 that involved two tractor-trailers and two cars.

I-16 westbound remained shut down for less than an hour before opening back up to one lane.

Both cars involved were towed around 11:45 a.m., the tractor-trailers were able to drive off on their own and the road opened back up completely just before noon.

No injuries have been reported by either ECSO or GSP.

[UPDATE 11:50 a.m.] Our crews at the scene said all westbound lanes on I-16 are cleared.

[ORIGINAL STORY] Westbound lanes of I-16 are shutdown in Effingham County after a major crash.

The crash is near Old River Road/ exit 148 and involves two semi-trucks and two vehicles, according to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.

The interstate has been shutdown and blocked off, with westbound traffic being rerouted to Hwy 280.

There is currently no time listed for when the highway will reopen. WTOC will update this article as more information becomes available.
