Hurricane Melissa approaching Cuba, still a major storm

by Andrew Gorton

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Hurricane Melissa is forecast to make a second landfall on Cuba pre-dawn Wednesday. It may still be a CAT4 storm with 140mph winds. Just before 1pm Tuesday, Melissa made landfall as a powerful Category 5 storm with max sustained wind at 185 miles per hour and a pressure of 892 mb.

This morning, the minimum central pressure for this storm dropped to 892 MB, making it the 3th strongest hurricane on record in the Atlantic basin based on pressure.

Melissa’s landfall makes it the Atlantic basin’s first landfalling Category 5 Hurricane since Dorian on September 1, 2019.

Unfortunately, conditions will continue to worsen across Jamaica through into the afternoon.

Life-threatening storm surge and dangerous waves are already impacting the southern coast.

In addition to the destructive wind threat, some communities of Jamaica could receive 20-30 inches of rain over the next three days.

Melissa is also bringing a flooding threat to the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba, where over a foot of rain could fall.

After Melissa moves over Jamaica it is expected to make another landfall over Eastern Cuba as a major hurricane on Wednesday morning. This storm will weaken as it moves over the Southeast Bahamas and Turks and Caicos on Wednesday.

Melissa will continue its northeastern track as it moves toward Bermuda on Friday morning. We are not expecting impacts in the United States
