House fire displaces family of 8 in Grays Hill

by WTOC Staff

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - A family of eight people was displaced after a house fire in Grays Hill Tuesday afternoon.

Burton Fire District officials said four adults and four children were displaced after the fire started in a bedroom.

Fire crews arrived on scene just before 3 p.m. Tuesday and brought the flames under control within five minutes.

Burton Fire, MCAS Fire & Emergency and Beaufort County EMS responded to the call.

The flames were contained to the bedroom, but smoke damage affected the entire house. The fire has been fully extinguished and the Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, through investigators believe it started from an electrical issue. Crews do not believe the house had working smoke alarms, and remind residents to contact their local fire department if they need smoke alarms or help installing them.

This was the second house fire in January for the Burton Fire District.
