Hilton Head Airport expansion project complete
HILTON HEAD, S.C. (WTOC) - The Hilton Head Island Airport celebrated the grand opening of a new terminal Thursday.
The $42 million expansion project more than doubles the airport’s size. Construction and airport staff showed off the new 27,000-square-foot terminal.
The addition has security scanning equipment, boarding bridges, improved roadway access and a new gate area.
The team behind the project said it has been in the works for nearly eight years.
“It’s hard to see how it’s going to come together when you’re building it and I was kind of scratching my head a few times but now that it all came together mean it’s amazing to just look around and walk through this place,” said Jon Rembold, airport director for Beaufort County.
Travis Pence, the project’s architect, said the team is excited to reach this point.
Passengers can experience the upgraded security checkpoint and new terminal Friday.
