Heavy rains caused 4 sewage spills in Savannah since August 1st

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The City of Savannah has responded to four sewage spills already this month, each a result of prolonged heavy rainfall, according to a press release from the city.

  • SPILL #1: On August 2, 2025, city staff responded to a sewage spill at 511 Arlington Road, which resulted in an estimated sewage discharge of 7,260 gallons.
  • SPILL #2: On August 10, 2025, staff responded to a sewage spill at 12845 Stillwood Drive, which resulted in an estimated discharge of 1,260 gallons of sewage.
  • SPILL #3: On August 10, 2025, also on Stillwood but this time at 13204 Stillwood Dr., staff responded to a spill which resulted in an estimated discharge of 1,000 gallons of sewage.
  • SPILL #4: On August 11, 2025, staff responded to a sewage spill at 601 Penn Waller Road that resulted in the discharge of an estimated 2,000 gallons of sewage.

These are all classified as “minor spills” by the state Environmental Protection Division.

Minor spills are all sewage discharges under 10,000 gallons.

Altogether, Savannah’s sewage spills since August 1 total roughly 11,520 gallons.

According to the city, “All four sewage spills were the result of large volumes of storm water infiltrating the sanitary sewer system following heavy rainfall that overwhelmed the system capacity.”

The city says that the discharged sewage in each incident also contained a mix of storm water runoff.

Staff are investigating the source of storm water infiltrating into the sanitary system in each case to find and eliminate the entrance point.

This press release is only focused on the City of Savannah, and does not include the 24,000 gallons of sewage and stormwater which spilled into Horsepen Creek on Tybee Island earlier this week.
