Hardeeville honors Revolutionary War battle with dedication ceremony
HARDEEVILLE, SC. (WTOC) - In Hardeeville, a dedication ceremony honored the Battle of Purrysburg, a landmark engagement from the Revolutionary War.
The Battle of Purrysburg is an important story for the people of Hardeeville.
One lady even says she was brought to tears by its commemoration Tuesday at Millstone Landing, which is right off the river where Hardeeville resident Wes Goforth says his ancestor fought.
“He was a continental regular, that means he fought in George Washington’s army, and I’m very proud of that,” said Wes Goforth, Hardeeville resident.
Tuesday, the battle he fought in was remembered by decorating the area with signs that explain the battle, and other history of the war.
“I know that he’d be proud to look down today and see the current people honoring the place and the reason that he fought,” said Goforth.
This was brought up partially because of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a group that believes learning about history is crucial for a society.
“You need to know where you’ve been to know where you’re going,” said Heidi Herrin, Regent for Daughters of the American Revolution.
